Chairperson's Statement

In these difficult economic times, Age Concern Slough and Berkshire East celebrates 30 years in Slough. This shows the strength of both the organisation and the people involved in running the Charity. It has been a challenging 12 months, but we have overcome various difficulties because of the commitment and passion of the people working for Age Concern Slough and Berkshire East. This includes all the staff and volunteers, without whom we could not manage the organisation of the Charity.

I would like to thank everyone for all their hard work and look forward to their continued support in the future. We are also fortunate to have a committed and highly experienced Board of Directors. Their guidance and expertise has proved to be invaluable to both myself and Tracey. I would like to thank the Directors for their time and hard work. The public spending cuts in the coming months will put immense pressure upon Age Concern Slough and Berkshire East and the services it is able to provide for older people. We have taken various steps to mitigate some of the impact of the cuts, but a considerable amount of further work needs to be done in order to ensure we have the resources to fund much needed services. Efforts have been made to increase unrestricted income and this will be maintained over the coming months. We will also engage in positive discussions with Slough Borough Council, and our other supporters, to maximise the support we receive from them.

Many of you will be aware of the merger which created Age UK. Unless there are material changes, it is the intention of Age Concern Slough and Berkshire East to remain a local independent charity rather than join Age UK. This will undoubtedly bring many challenges, but we are confident these can be overcome. It is felt that maintaining our independence will enable us to continue to provide a greater level of service to older people locally. It will also put us in a strong position, both strategically and financially, for the future years. Finally, I would like to thank Tracey for all her hard work, commitment and determination in ensuring Age Concern Slough and Berkshire East’s success. I am privileged to be part of this organisation and look forward to working together with you all next year.
